“I put a story about a kayak journey into an Indigenous world and made it about protecting the lands and waters of my own people. It is my love song to the coast,” said Director, Zoe Hopkins.

Los Angeles, CA – December 3, 2018 – Travel on a fascinating journey through the Inside Passage with writer/director Zoe Hopkins’ family adventure, ‘KAYAK TO KLEMTU’, an intimate story with a powerful ecological message. Now streaming on iTunes here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/kayak-to-klemtu/id1439369196.

As Zoe Hopkins’ (Mohawk Midnight Runners) directorial debut and written alongside Michael Sparaga (Servitude), KAYAK TO KLEMTU journeys through the choppy waters of the Inside Passage, following a young 14-year-old girl, Ella (Ta’Kaiya Blaney), who convinces her family to travel by kayak up the river to save their homeland waterways from an ecological disaster. From Tla’Amin to Klemtu, BC, the family navigates their blend of cultures and desires, while their spirits honor the coast as a place for each of us to call home and protect.

KAYAK TO KLEMTU is sincere in its unfussy naturalism. The film engages audiences with a gently sentimental character study that conveys the responsibility we have to uphold and preserve the land our ancestors left us,” wrote Cinema Blographer.

Produced by award winning Daniel Bekerman (The Witch) and Sheryl Kotzer from Scythia Films, the leading Canadian service producer, Hopkins “has made a genuinely delightful, poignant and lovely movie with KAYAK TO KLEMTU. The film has a beautiful heart, but also entertains with sweet and amiable humor,” gleamed True View Reviews.

When her Uncle David (Evan Adam) passes away, Ella takes it upon herself to fulfill his dying wish – to kayak from Tla’Amin to the remote island of Klemtu to stand and testify to protect their ancestral land from an oil pipeline. Unable to make the journey alone, accompanies her is her grouchy Uncle Don (Lorne Cardinal), her compulsive and recently widowed Aunt Cory (Sonja Bennett), and her uncle’s clumsy stepson, Alex (Jared Ager-Foster). Searching for ways to cope with their grief while navigating the choppy waters of Inside Passage, will the family be able to work together to complete Uncle David’s dying wish – to save their indigenous homeland waters?

“The film is also a touching story about familial bonding and mourning over the loss of a dearly loved family member. The film also features great performances by the cast, particularly Ta’Kaiya Blaney who gives a beautiful and empowering performance as Ella,” wrote True View Reviews. From North Vancouver, Blaney is a young environmental and Indigenous rights activist who has spoken before the UN.

“Everyone takes this journey in some form, be it with a kayak, VW van or a few minutes of soul searching, and Blaney’s strong performance makes Ella an accessible guide for viewers of all ages,” wrote Cinema Blographer. TriCoast Entertainment has exclusively released Hopkins’ KAYAK TO KLEMTU onto US digital streaming platforms including: iTunes, Hoopla, DirecTV, Dish and FlixFling with additional platforms to come.
