In Light of Canada’s New Food Guide, Leading Toronto Dental Clinic Highlights the Importance of Nutrition in Oral Health

Canada’s New Food Guide is still awaiting publication, however recent drafts published give an idea of what to expect and more importantly, what the implications are for better oral health.

Downsview Dental, a leading provider of kids dentistry, dental crowns, dental implants, sedation dentistry, root canals, restorative dentistry in North York, aims to raise awareness of the importance a balanced and nutritious diet as well as healthy habits have to dental and oral health. With Canada’s Food Guide expecting publication early in 2019 and first drafts already made available to the general public, the now famous food groups rainbow illustration has been amended to put a more intense emphasis on consuming a balanced diet of whole-grain foods, plenty of vegetables and fruit and protein foods on a daily basis. Canadian Dieticians have decided to take out the recommendation for a glass of juice and put more focus on adequate water consumption. Downsview Dental agrees the right nutrients in the right quantities are beneficial for teeth and gums and can prevent some of the most common dental issues, such as decay or gum disease.

One of the executives at Downsview Dental recently stated, “According to the latest available statistics the average Canadian consumes about 40 kilograms of sugar any given year. Anyone can realize what a massive impact that has to teeth and overall dental health. There’s also a growing number of evidence which links periodontal illnesses with general health and well-being and simultaneously, with the risks it can further pose such as developing chronic conditions. We are very happy the new guide warns against limiting sugar, sodium and saturated fat since products like desserts and fizzy drinks have long been an enemy of healthy teeth. Our team here is keen on making sure our patients receive complete advice in how to make sure they reach optimal levels of oral health and hygiene and we strongly believe treatment does not stop at simply performing a procedure or a treatment.”

As one of the dental pioneers in the area, the clinic is dedicated to offering integrated solutions that can fit any schedule, budget or circumstance and those include but are not limited to evening and weekend appointments, direct insurance billing and flexible payment plans. A team of compassionate specialists is always at hand to help patients, whether they require paediatric dentistry services or adult ones, whether it’s a standard treatment or something more complex such as restorative services.
