Rehab Centre Debates Inpatient vs. Outpatient Approaches for Men with Substance Abuse

Drug abuse and addiction are high on the agenda around the world. But the situation is nowhere as shattering as it is in the Americas, particularly the U.S. and Canada. Latest estimates from Statistics Canada reveal that approximately 10 Canadians died from an illegal drug use every single day in the past two years.

Men however are approximately twice more likely to use almost all types of illicit drugs than women, and equally their use and abuse is more likely to result in emergency department visits or overdose deaths. To add to this, there are further differences that impact how men and women respond to various treatment approaches.

It’s more than just about location

At a first glance, the only difference between outpatient and inpatient addiction rehab seems to be whether the patient will follow the treatment in his own residence or at the centre. But it is more than just about location and ensuring patients are aware and understand the differences is key, argues Inspire Change Wellness

“If we were to simplify the two approaches, the main differences would be that inpatient treatment plays a critical role in removing distractions and temptations from the patient’s usual environment. This means they can fully be immersed in a drug free, safe environment and focus solely on their healing. The everyday stress that comes with the hustle and bustle of life is therefore eliminated. On the other hand, we completely understand not everyone can remove themselves completely from their lives for an extended period of time. Which is why we also offer the flexibility of outpatient services which means that the patient still has to report to our facility every day, but can also continue going to work for example. This also comes with risks on its own – the substance or at least the temptation and the triggers remain” said an Inspire Change Wellness spokesperson.

Every case is different

The centre also believes every patient case is inherently different, and in particular men struggling with severe addiction may not respond to outpatient treatment as well as those with moderate or minor substance abuse.

“There are so many factors at play here. What we want to raise awareness of is that addiction affects everyone differently, and in particular we know there are substantial differences between men and women. There needs to be an individualized approach to help men who are addicted to seek help and treatment, and most importantly follow through. That is what we are here for and we would like nothing more than to be able to support that decision-making,” added the spokesperson for the centre.

As an addiction treatment centre dedicated to men, Inspire Change Wellness benefits from the necessary experience and knowledge, and an innate dedication to helping equip those struggling with the necessary tools to return to a normal, productive life.
